The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a comprehensive group of blood tests used to evaluate the health and functioning of the liver. The liver performs essential functions such as metabolism, detoxification, protein synthesis, bile production, and nutrient storage. An LFT measures important liver enzymes, proteins, and other substances, including ALT (SGPT), AST (SGOT), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Bilirubin, Total Protein, and Albumin, to assess liver function and detect liver-related disorders.

The Liver Function Test (LFT) is recommended for individuals with symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), fatigue, abdominal pain or swelling, dark urine, pale-colored stools, nausea, loss of appetite, or those with a history of hepatitis, excessive alcohol consumption, fatty liver disease, or long-term medication use. Elevated liver enzymes may indicate liver inflammation or damage, increased bilirubin levels may suggest jaundice or bile flow obstruction, and low albumin levels can be associated with chronic liver disease. The LFT is also widely used to monitor patients with known liver disorders and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Test results should always be interpreted together with the patient’s symptoms, medical history, imaging studies, and other laboratory investigations for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Early detection through LFT helps prevent serious liver complications and supports long-term liver health.

Liver Function Test (LFT) Test-

What is the Liver Function Test (LFT)?
The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that evaluates liver health by measuring liver enzymes, proteins, and other substances produced or processed by the liver.
The test is performed to detect liver diseases such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis, assess liver damage, monitor treatment, and evaluate bile flow and liver function.
The test is recommended for individuals with jaundice, abdominal pain, fatigue, dark urine, loss of appetite, excessive alcohol consumption, chronic liver disease, or those taking medications that may affect the liver.
Abnormal results may suggest liver inflammation, liver cell damage, bile duct obstruction, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or other liver disorders. Further investigations may be required to determine the exact cause.
Fasting is generally not required for an LFT. However, your healthcare provider or laboratory may recommend fasting depending on whether other blood tests are being performed at the same time.
The LFT helps detect liver disorders early, monitors liver disease progression and treatment response, prevents serious complications such as liver failure, and supports overall liver health.
