The LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) test is a blood test that measures the level of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), an enzyme found in almost all cells of the body. The highest concentrations of LDH are present in the liver, heart, muscles, kidneys, lungs, and red blood cells. When these tissues are damaged or diseased, LDH is released into the bloodstream, causing its level to rise. Measuring LDH helps healthcare providers evaluate tissue injury and monitor a variety of medical conditions affecting these organs.

The LDH test is commonly used to investigate liver disease, heart disorders, muscle injury, kidney disease, lung conditions, hemolytic anemia, and other disorders associated with tissue damage. It is also useful for monitoring changes in tumor burden after chemotherapy in certain cancers. However, because LDH levels can increase in many different conditions and are not specific to cancer, the test should not be used as a standalone diagnostic test for cancer. LDH results should always be interpreted alongside the patient’s symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and other laboratory and imaging findings to support accurate diagnosis and treatment monitoring.

LDH; Lactate Dehydrogenase (NHC) Test-

What is the LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) test?
The LDH test is a blood test that measures the level of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), an enzyme found in many tissues, including the liver, heart, muscles, kidneys, lungs, and red blood cells.
The test is performed to help evaluate tissue damage, investigate diseases affecting various organs, and monitor certain medical conditions, including response to cancer treatment.
A blood (serum) sample is required for testing.
High LDH levels may occur due to liver disease, heart attack, muscle injury, kidney disease, lung disorders, hemolytic anemia, infections, inflammation, and certain cancers. Results should be interpreted along with other clinical findings.
No. Although LDH levels may be elevated in some cancers and can help monitor treatment response, the LDH test alone cannot diagnose cancer.
The test helps detect tissue injury, evaluate organ damage, monitor disease progression, assess treatment response in selected conditions, and support clinical decision-making when used with other diagnostic tests.

LDH; Lactate Dehydrogenase (NHC)

LDH is present in all cells of the body with highest concentrations in liver, heart, muscle, kidney, lung & erythrocytes. This assay is useful for investigating a variety of diseases involving these organs. It is also used to monitor changes in tumor burden after chemotherapy. As the LDH elevations in cancer are very erratic, it should not be used for the diagnosis of cancer.
