The Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect (NDC) test is a blood test used to measure the levels of total bilirubin, direct (conjugated) bilirubin, and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. The liver processes bilirubin and helps remove it from the body through bile. Abnormal bilirubin levels may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, excessive red blood cell breakdown, or other medical conditions.
This test is commonly recommended for individuals with symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, fatigue, or suspected liver disorders. Measuring total, direct, and indirect bilirubin helps doctors evaluate liver function, diagnose the cause of jaundice, monitor liver diseases, and assess conditions affecting red blood cell destruction when interpreted alongside clinical findings and other laboratory investigations.
