Anti Nuclear Antibody / Factor

The Anti Nuclear Antibody / Factor (ANA) test is a blood test used to detect antinuclear antibodies (ANA), which are antibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly attack the nuclei of the body’s own cells. The presence of these antibodies may indicate an autoimmune disorder, where the immune system attacks healthy tissues instead of protecting them. The ANA test is commonly used as a screening tool for connective tissue and autoimmune diseases and is often performed along with other autoimmune markers for a more accurate diagnosis.

The ANA test is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent joint pain and swelling, muscle pain, chronic fatigue, skin rashes, photosensitivity (sensitivity to sunlight), unexplained fever, hair loss, or unexplained weight loss. It helps in the evaluation of autoimmune conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Sjögren’s syndrome, scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, and other autoimmune disorders. A positive ANA result does not confirm a specific disease, as low-positive results may also occur in healthy individuals. Therefore, ANA results should always be interpreted together with the patient’s symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and additional laboratory investigations. Early detection of autoimmune diseases through ANA testing supports timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and better long-term disease management.
