Anti Nuclear Antibody / Factor (ANA/ANF), Eia (NHC)

The Anti Nuclear Antibody / Factor (ANA/ANF), EIA (NHC) test is a blood test used to detect antinuclear antibodies (ANA), which are antibodies that mistakenly attack the body’s own cells. These autoantibodies are commonly associated with autoimmune diseases, where the immune system attacks healthy tissues instead of protecting the body. The EIA (Enzyme Immunoassay) method is used as a screening test to help identify the presence of these antibodies and support the diagnosis of autoimmune disorders.

The ANA/ANF, EIA test is commonly recommended for individuals with symptoms such as persistent joint pain, muscle aches, chronic fatigue, skin rashes, photosensitivity, unexplained fever, or other signs suggestive of autoimmune disease. It is used as a primary screening test for conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scleroderma, Addison’s disease, and other connective tissue disorders. A positive ANA result may indicate an autoimmune condition, but it can also occur in some healthy individuals, particularly adults over the age of 65. Similarly, a negative result does not completely rule out an autoimmune disease. Therefore, ANA results should always be interpreted together with the patient’s symptoms, clinical examination, medical history, and additional laboratory investigations. Early detection through ANA screening helps guide further testing, supports timely diagnosis, and assists healthcare providers in planning appropriate treatment.
