AFB Rapid Culture by MGIT - Urine (M)

The AFB Rapid Culture by MGIT – Urine (M) test is a specialized microbiology test used to detect Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB), particularly Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in a urine sample. The test uses the Mycobacterial Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) system, a rapid liquid culture method that promotes the growth of mycobacteria faster than conventional culture techniques. This allows for earlier detection of tuberculosis affecting the urinary tract and other genitourinary organs.

The test is recommended for individuals with suspected genitourinary tuberculosis (GU-TB) or persistent urinary symptoms that may be associated with a mycobacterial infection. A 15 mL spot urine sample collected in a sterile, leak-proof container is required for testing. The MGIT culture method helps detect the presence of mycobacteria, supports early diagnosis, and enables timely treatment.
