Zinc, Serum / Plasma (NHC)

The Zinc, Serum / Plasma test measures the level of zinc in the blood, an essential trace mineral required for the proper functioning of numerous enzymes involved in immune function, wound healing, protein synthesis, cell growth, DNA synthesis, and metabolism. Zinc plays a vital role in maintaining healthy skin, supporting normal growth and development, and strengthening the body’s immune response. This test is primarily used to detect zinc deficiency, which may occur due to inadequate dietary intake, poor intestinal absorption, or excessive loss of zinc from the body. Although elevated zinc levels are uncommon, excessive zinc intake may interfere with copper absorption, leading to copper deficiency (hypocupremia).

The Zinc, Serum / Plasma test is recommended for individuals with delayed wound healing, frequent infections, poor growth, hair loss, skin disorders, loss of appetite, altered taste or smell, or suspected nutritional deficiencies. It is also useful for monitoring individuals receiving zinc supplementation, long-term nutritional support, or treatment for malabsorption disorders. At Nidan Pathology Lab, we provide NABL-accredited testing, FREE home sample collection, advanced laboratory technology, and accurate, timely reports to support the diagnosis and management of zinc deficiency and related nutritional disorders.

Zinc, Serum / Plasma (NHC) Test-

What is the Zinc, Serum / Plasma test?
The Zinc, Serum / Plasma test is a blood test that measures the level of zinc, an essential trace mineral required for immune function, wound healing, growth, and normal enzyme activity.
The test is performed to diagnose zinc deficiency, evaluate nutritional status, investigate malabsorption disorders, and monitor zinc supplementation or long-term nutritional therapy.
The test is recommended for individuals with poor wound healing, frequent infections, hair loss, skin problems, loss of appetite, altered taste or smell, poor growth, or suspected zinc deficiency, as advised by a healthcare provider.
Fasting may be recommended by some laboratories for more accurate results. Follow your healthcare provider’s or laboratory’s instructions before sample collection.
Low zinc levels may indicate zinc deficiency caused by poor dietary intake, malabsorption, or increased loss from the body. High zinc levels are uncommon but may result from excessive zinc supplementation, which can interfere with copper absorption and lead to copper deficiency.
The test helps detect zinc deficiency, assess nutritional health, support the diagnosis of malabsorption disorders, monitor zinc therapy, and guide appropriate nutritional management.

Introduction:

Zinc is an essential element which acts as a critical co-factor in various enzyme systems and is required for active wound healing. Zinc deficiency occurs due to lack of dietary absorption or loss after absorption. Zinc excess is not a major clinical concern. The only known effect of excessive zinc ingestion is interference with copper absorption leading to hypocupremia. This assay helps to detect zinc deficiency. Elevated serum zinc is of minimal clinical interest.
