Introduction:

Zinc is an essential element which acts as a critical co-factor in various enzyme systems and is required for active wound healing. Zinc deficiency occurs due to lack of dietary absorption or loss after absorption. Zinc excess is not a major clinical concern. The only known effect of excessive zinc ingestion is interference with copper absorption leading to hypocupremia. This assay helps to detect zinc deficiency. Elevated serum zinc is of minimal clinical interest.

Normal Range:

Serum/Plasma Zinc: 70–120 µg/dL (10.7–18.4 µmol/L).
Reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories.
Low zinc levels may indicate zinc deficiency due to poor dietary intake, malabsorption, or increased loss, while elevated levels are uncommon and are usually associated with excessive zinc supplementation. Results should be interpreted along with clinical findings and other nutritional assessments.

Specification:

Patients should refrain from sea/ fresh water fish 3 days prior to specimen collection. If Gadolinium or Iodine containing contrast media has been administered, specimen should not be collected for 96 hours Use only specified containers.
