The HLA-B27, Qualitative test is a blood test that detects the presence of the HLA-B27 genetic marker, which is associated with certain autoimmune and inflammatory joint disorders.

Why is the HLA-B27 test performed?

The test is performed to help diagnose conditions such as Ankylosing Spondylitis, Reactive Arthritis (Reiter’s Syndrome), Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, and other forms of spondyloarthritis.

Who should undergo the HLA-B27 test?

The test is recommended for individuals with persistent lower back pain, morning stiffness, joint pain, reduced spinal flexibility, recurrent eye inflammation (uveitis), or symptoms suggestive of inflammatory arthritis.

Is fasting required before the HLA-B27 test?

No. Fasting or any special preparation is generally not required before this test.

Does a positive HLA-B27 result confirm a disease?

No. A positive HLA-B27 result does not by itself confirm a specific disease. Some healthy individuals also carry the HLA-B27 marker. The result should be interpreted together with your symptoms, physical examination, imaging studies, and other laboratory tests.

Approximately 8% of the normal population carries the HLA B27 antigen. It is present in Ankylosing spondylitis (89%), Reiter’s syndrome (79%) & Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis (42%).
