The Ferritin (NHC) test is a blood test that measures the level of ferritin, a protein that stores iron in the body. Ferritin levels reflect the body’s iron reserves, making this test one of the most reliable methods for assessing iron status. Low ferritin levels indicate iron deficiency and may help diagnose iron deficiency anemia, while normal or elevated ferritin levels may be seen in anemia of chronic disease, inflammatory conditions, or iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis.

The Ferritin test is commonly recommended for individuals with symptoms of anemia, fatigue, weakness, unexplained tiredness, or suspected iron imbalance. It is also useful in evaluating iron overload disorders, monitoring iron therapy, and assessing chronic inflammatory conditions, as ferritin acts as an acute-phase reactant and may increase during inflammation or infection. The test results should always be interpreted together with other iron studies, such as serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation, along with the patient’s clinical history and physical examination. The Ferritin test provides valuable information for diagnosing iron-related disorders and guiding appropriate treatment and monitoring.

Ferritin (NHC) Test-

What is the Ferritin test?
The Ferritin test is a blood test that measures the level of ferritin, a protein that stores iron in the body. It helps evaluate the body’s iron reserves.
The test is performed to diagnose iron deficiency, investigate anemia, assess iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis, and monitor iron therapy or chronic inflammatory conditions.
A blood (serum) sample is required for testing.
Low ferritin levels usually indicate iron deficiency or depleted iron stores. High ferritin levels may be associated with iron overload, inflammation, infection, liver disease, or certain chronic medical conditions.
The Ferritin test helps distinguish iron deficiency anemia from other types of anemia, but it is usually interpreted along with other blood tests and iron studies.
The Ferritin test helps assess iron stores, supports the diagnosis and monitoring of iron-related disorders, guides treatment decisions, and provides valuable information when interpreted with other clinical and laboratory findings.

Ferritin (NHC)

Ferritin levels reflect iron stoes in normal individuals. A low serum ferritin level is an indicator of iron depletion. This assay is clinically useful in distinguishing between Iron deficiency anemia (low level) and anemia of chronic disease (normal or high level). It is also useful to assess iron overload conditions like Hemochromatosis. Ferritin is also an acute phase reactant.
