AMYLASE, SERUM (NHC)

The Amylase, Serum (NHC) test measures the level of amylase, a digestive enzyme primarily produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. This test is commonly used to evaluate pancreatic disorders, particularly acute pancreatitis and acute flare-ups of chronic pancreatitis. Elevated serum amylase levels may also occur due to drug-induced acute pancreatitis, blockage of the pancreatic duct caused by gallstones or pancreatic carcinoma, and certain other abdominal conditions. The test helps clinicians assess pancreatic function and identify inflammation or injury affecting the pancreas.

The Serum Amylase test is recommended for individuals experiencing sudden severe upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, or suspected pancreatic disease. A blood sample is collected from a vein for laboratory analysis. The results should always be interpreted along with the patient’s symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and other investigations such as lipase testing and imaging studies. Early detection of abnormal amylase levels supports prompt diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and better management of pancreatic disorders, helping reduce the risk of serious complications.
