The Culture Aerobic Sputum (M) test is a laboratory test used to identify aerobic bacteria causing infections in the respiratory tract. A sputum (phlegm) sample collected from the lungs is cultured in a special growth medium to detect disease-causing microorganisms. Common bacteria identified through this test include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas species, and coliform bacilli. If bacterial growth is detected, an antibiotic susceptibility (sensitivity) test is performed to determine which antibiotics are most effective against the identified organism.

This test is commonly recommended for individuals with a persistent cough, fever, chest infection, excessive sputum production, difficulty breathing, or suspected bacterial pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections. The Culture Aerobic Sputum (M) test helps doctors accurately identify the causative bacteria, select the most appropriate antibiotic treatment, monitor severe respiratory infections, and improve patient outcomes through targeted therapy.

Culture Aerobic Sputum (M) Test-

What is the Culture Aerobic Sputum (M) test?
The Culture Aerobic Sputum (M) test is a laboratory test that identifies aerobic bacteria causing respiratory tract infections by analyzing a sputum (phlegm) sample.
It is performed to diagnose bacterial lung infections, identify the causative organism, and determine the most effective antibiotic for treatment.
A sputum sample is collected in a sterile container and cultured in the laboratory. If bacteria grow, an antibiotic sensitivity test is performed to identify the most suitable antibiotic.
The test commonly detects bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas species, coliform bacilli, and other aerobic bacteria that cause respiratory infections.
No special preparation is usually required. However, an early morning sputum sample collected before eating or brushing your teeth may provide the best results. Follow your doctor’s instructions for sample collection.
Antibiotic sensitivity testing helps determine which antibiotics are most effective against the identified bacteria, allowing doctors to prescribe targeted treatment and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
