The Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect (NDC) test is a blood test used to measure the levels of total bilirubin, direct (conjugated) bilirubin, and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. The liver processes bilirubin and helps remove it from the body through bile. Abnormal bilirubin levels may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, excessive red blood cell breakdown, or other medical conditions.

This test is commonly recommended for individuals with symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, fatigue, or suspected liver disorders. Measuring total, direct, and indirect bilirubin helps doctors evaluate liver function, diagnose the cause of jaundice, monitor liver diseases, and assess conditions affecting red blood cell destruction when interpreted alongside clinical findings and other laboratory investigations.

Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect (NDC) Test -

What is the Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect (NDC) test?
The Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect (NDC) test is a blood test that measures total, direct (conjugated), and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin levels to evaluate liver function and diagnose conditions affecting the liver and red blood cells.
This test is used to diagnose jaundice, assess liver function, detect bile duct obstruction, monitor liver diseases, and evaluate excessive red blood cell breakdown.
Fasting is usually not required, but your doctor may recommend fasting for a few hours if the test is performed along with other blood investigations.
Elevated bilirubin levels may indicate liver disease, hepatitis, gallstones, bile duct blockage, hemolytic anemia, or other conditions affecting bilirubin metabolism.
A small blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm and analyzed in a laboratory to measure total, direct, and indirect bilirubin levels.
No. While abnormal bilirubin levels can indicate liver or blood-related disorders, doctors usually interpret the results along with liver function tests, imaging studies, and clinical findings for an accurate diagnosis.

What is Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect ?
Bilirubin is a yellowish waste product of red cell breakdown in the blood. It goes into the liver to be excreted out. High levels in the blood indicate inability of the liver to excrete bilirubin leading to jaundice. Direct bilirubin is the product that undergoes a chemical change in the liver, goes to intestines & is excreted in the stool. Indirect bilirubin is the product of red cell breakdown which goes to the liver.
